bermuda and Montagne Magique, new artistic ecosystems

In 2022, Documents d'artistes Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes is undertaking the production of a series of filmed portraits of artists, thanks to support for filming and alternative broadcasts from the Ministry of Culture.
These films, whose production is mainly entrusted to artists, focus on inter-generational cooperation and links and on innovative initiatives carried out on different urban and rural terrains. They call on the words of artists on their research and on singular projects in which they engage as actors in the evolution of their territories.
It is in this context that Guillaume Robert is invited to make two new films with the co-founders of the places of creation, production and distribution located in department of Ain: Montagne Magique in Hauteville and bermuda in Sergy.

On this occasion, the museum of contemporary art offers a screening of the films by Guillaume Robert, in the presence of the director.
The screening will be preceded by an introduction by Mathilde Chénin in which she proposes to reflect on the forms of commonality that are composed according to the simultaneous experience of "living together" and "working as an artist".
Finally, a round table will give the floor to Gaëlle Foray, Jean-Xavier Renaud from Montagne Magique as well as Bénédicte Le Pimpec and Maxime Bondu from bermuda to discuss these two collective experiences.

Moderation: Mathilde Chénin
Mathilde Chénin is co-founder of the bermuda project, alongside Maxime Bondu, Bénédicte Le Pimpec, Guillaume Robert and Julien Griffit. She has just completed a doctorate in visual arts and urban sociology: When artists form by living together. Uses, presences, imaginations.
Under the direction of Luca Pattaroni and Olivier Desvoignes (LASUR - Urban Sociology Laboratory, EDAR Federal Polytechnic School of Lausanne and HEAD—Geneva).

In addition

bermuda is a place of production, research and dissemination in contemporary arts, located in the town of Sergy, in Ain. It was founded by artists Max Bondu, Mathilde Chénin and Guillaume Robert, by exhibition curator Bénédicte Le Pimpec and by computer engineer Julien Griffit. In addition to providing its members with spaces and professional tools for creation, the Bermuda association develops an artistic project based on residency times, mentoring and workshops. Each of the proposals is thus thought out endogenously from the issues that are those of the place and the team at the time they are formulated. Composed of individual and shared workspaces, under a 1300m2 roof, the building which houses these activities was designed by the ACTM workshop (Thomas Mouillon and Adrien Cuny) and self-built between 2018 and 2021 by the Bermuda team . In 2021, Bermuda won the Equerre d'Argent in the First Architectural Work category.

Montagne Magique is a private cultural project under development. It is located in a former sanatorium on the heights of the Plateau d'Hauteville in Ain, its name is borrowed from the famous novel by Thomas Mann.
Hauteville is a former sanatorial station, our project contributes to the safeguarding of this singular architectural heritage which deserves to be highlighted. This mid-mountain rural area located 900 meters above sea level has one of the oldest contemporary art centers in France, the CACL founded in 1971. Montagne Magique is part of this cultural history and works in synergy , creating a center around contemporary art, creation and craftsmanship.
We bought our place in April 2019 to set up our professional workshops there. We are four contemporary artists (Gaëlle Foray, Karim Kal, Sophie Pouille and Jean-Xavier Renaud), an artisanal brewer (Ludwig De Belvalet), an enameller on metals (Corinne Boyer), a textile designer (Marie Aveline), an author- comic book illustrator (Julien Camp), as well as the Claudine and Jean-Marc Salomon Collection. Collective spaces (exhibition hall, conference room, common daily use, gardens, etc.) complete the project.
