Laure Subreville
Born in 1993
Lives and works in Bordeaux & Lyon
Laure Subreville graduated from the École des beaux-arts de Bordeaux in 2017, after which she spent a year as an artist-in-residence at the Pavillon in Bordeaux in 2018. There, she had the opportunity of working with Ange Leccia and developed a singular project focusing on a collective of men wrestlers, Le printemps (Spring) and L’été (Summer). She then continued her work in the context of two other residencies in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. The “Artiste en entreprise” programme gave her the opportunity to shoot footage at the Durousseau Outils Coupants tool-sharpening workshop and to produce the film Jean-Baptiste. She then participated in the travelling residency programme <3 with her project Plein air (Open Air) and showed her work at Confort Moderne in Poitiers, at LACS & La Vitrine in Limoges, and at La Fabrique Pola in Bordeaux. Social, ethnological and political issues have become major focuses in the artist’s videos and are now core elements in her work.
After making several short films that all tie in to each other through the strong presence of music, such as Fortuna (2020) – for which she received a support grant for artists during the crisis, as well as support from the Frac Nouvelle-Aquitaine Meca and the Drac – and Artémis (2022) – created in partnership with the artist Christophe Doucet, the Sens Commun agency in Lormont and the IME in Lesperon –, Laure Subreville shot her first documentary, Camopi One, a large-scale project filmed in French Guyana and released in May 2022 which centres on musical and ethnological issues within the Wayãpi community in the village of Camopi, on the river Oyapock. This project stemmed from a partnership with the Variances contemporary music ensemble, the composer Thierry Pécou, the Amazonian Park nature reserve, Massala production and the ethnomusicologist Jean-Michel Beaudet.
Lately, she has continued her research with several films that are currently being written or produced: Parlez-moi d’amour (Tell Me About Love), a documentary short filmed with nursing home residents; Crique Diamant (Diamond Creek), another short film made in Guyana with the support of Normandie Images; and The Loves of Æneas, which centres on H. Purcell’s opera, performed by the Argonautes ensemble and Massala. The latter was acquired by the Frac Nouvelle-Aquitaine and is scheduled for release in October 2023.
