Juliette George

Born in 1992

Lives and works in Arles

Juliette George originally trained as a photographer, but now produces predominantly text-based works. This paradox may perhaps point to a clear tendency to eschew expectations. Her work, which borrows as much from conceptual art as it does from the realities of everyday life, demonstrates how acutely she looks at our contemporary world, particularly its economic and political beliefs. According to the artist herself, she deliberately chooses to use a bureaucratic aesthetic — that is, cold, disembodied, nondescript, at times boring. By performing specific gestures (like the redacting of presidential speeches or of an economic treatise…), she pokes fun at the codes and gimmicks related to power structures. From de-speculation to the shaping of a bankruptcy, Juliette George questions the notion of value and the narrative that surrounds it and serves as its basis. At the same time, she explores linguistic jargon or technical lingo in search of vestiges of a stubborn, quirky, playful, or even irreverent form of poetry.
