Béranger Laymond
Born in 1982
Lives and works in Bayonne and Boucau
Béranger Laymond’s canvases work like collections of pieces of paintings assembled here and there, at the whims of intuition. They produce an energy of the accidental and a permanent rebalancing of urgently-projected forms. It is an impure abstraction, mixed in with brightly coloured figures. An intense and Dionysian cocktail. This form of painting, informed by art history and pop culture, borrows its lexicon from B movies, punk culture and contemporary painting.
Béranger Laymond graduated from the Beaux-Arts in Nantes after studying at the École supérieure d’art Pays Basque. He started out creating sculpture-installations that deal with societal or historical subjects relating to the theme of utopia. During his time teaching visual fundamentals at ESAPB, he gradually turned to a more two-dimensional practice, painting on unstretched canvases that he playfully arranges in space, showing his pronounced taste for installation and scenography.
