Al Khayma

Public commissions, 2010
Quartier Champvallon, Bethoncourt

This project was thought up by the artist following Muammar Gaddafi's visit to the Elysée gardens. It was produced as part of a residency begun in February 2009 with the Center Régional d'Art Contemporain le 19 de Montbéliard, with the support of the ANRU (National Agency for Urban Renewal).

In June 2010, the towns of Bethoncourt and Etupes met for a barbecue in the Champvallon district.

Al Khayma is presented as an ephemeral architecture, a tent that uses the surrounding urban furniture as a support structure, here the collective clothes lines. This space, which does not fail to evoke the traditional nomadic dwelling, hosted a set of cultural activities during the day.

This project was carried out thanks to the collaboration of two inhabitants of the district, Soraya Benmahdi and Zakia Benahouag, who carried out the work of cutting and sewing, as well as the technical services of the city and the team of the Regional Center of Contemporary Art on the 19th.

The work has now been acquired by the City of Béthoncourt. Every year, on the occasion of the Khayma festival, the tent is reinstalled and made available to the inhabitants.
