Luz Severino

Luz Severino’s work explores identity, memory, nature, and life. Influenced by Dominican and Martinican culture and society, she creates artworks rich in texture and symbolism, highlighting the connections between personal history, society, and the environment.
She works primarily in painting and drawing on canvas and handmade paper. She also practices printmaking, sewing, sculpture, and installation using recycled metal, wood, and mosaic… All these mediums are marked by colorful threads that form a signature motif linking her paintings and sculptures.
Her approach uniquely blends abstraction and figuration. Her painting, abstract at its core, invites the viewer to seek out and discover concrete human forms beyond seemingly random brushstrokes. This well-rounded visual artist, who is difficult to categorize, develops a style that could be described as neo-figurative, focusing on depicting daily life, societal inequalities, and the utopian joy of the Caribbean people.

Luz Severino: “A perfect world does not exist, of course, but we must strive towards it, and that is what I try to do with my printmaking by overlaying real and imaginary worlds, to invite viewers to better perceive the bonds that unite us so strongly in this Caribbean region from where I come from.”
