Camille Beauplan

Hailing from a fairly isolated rural environment, Camille Beauplan spent her childhood in direct contact with nature and the popular culture of the time, which in her household consisted of television, radio and mail order clothing magazines.

As a consequence of this upbringing, she experiences today’s society as a highly exotic grounds for exploration. At once a painter, a pseudo-scientist and a tourist, she observes us, scrutinises our every move, our behaviours, our constructions, and takes a large number of photographs that will in turn become paintings, wallpapers, or both. The thing that draws her attention the most is our perfectibility. She uses art history, the codes of visual communication, images, their materiality and the way they relate to one another to highlight the tragicomic power and poetic richness of mediocre situations. Camille Beauplan delights in the films of Jacques Tati and David Lynch and literary works such as Voltaire’s Candide: Optimism.
